Luckily, there's a greatly-overhauled version included in Mass Effect Legendary Edition, and buying LE on sale is probably cheaper than buying ME1 ($16 CDN for LE right now, opposed to $40 for ME1 right now), let alone cheaper than picking up the whole trilogy piecemeal. 16 years have passed, and I think most people are going to seriously struggle to make it through the story without becoming frustrated by the gameplay. The story is still as good as it ever was, but the gameplay seriously does not hold up. After recently playing through ME1 again, but via the legendary edition version instead, I can't recommend playing through this version at all, even if you already have it sitting around in your library. I played this version of ME1 in 2016, and it felt very clunky and dated then.
